Manufactured: Red Wing, Minnesota (Heritage line only)

Red Wing Heritage boots use a Goodyear welt, stitching the sole to the upper rather than gluing it, which is why an Iron Ranger can be resoled five or six times over a twenty-year life. The leather comes from Red Wing's own S.B. Foot tannery, also in Minnesota, oil-tanned to a standard the company has controlled since 1905. The Iron Ranger's double-layer toe cap was originally built for iron ore miners on the Mesabi Range. Prices run $300-$350.

Important caveat: the Heritage line, Iron Ranger, Classic Moc, and Blacksmith among them, is genuinely all-domestic. Red Wing's other work boot lines and its owned sub-brands, Irish Setter, Vasque, and Worx, are manufactured mostly in Vietnam and Cambodia, with some Irish Setter styles made in China. Confirm you're looking at Heritage specifically before buying.

2. 🇺🇸 Thorogood

Manufactured: Merrill and Marshfield, Wisconsin

The upper is full-grain leather, the construction is Goodyear welt, and the boots are resoleable. All built at union shops in Merrill and Marshfield. Caveat: a small number of styles, including some in the Genesis Series, are assembled overseas to hit lower price points. USA-made styles carry a stitched flag label and are clearly identified on Thorogood's site. Unlike Red Wing, there are no sub-brands sold under the Thorogood name to cause confusion.

The rubber shell is injection-molded in Lewiston, and the leather upper is cut and triple-stitched in Brunswick, a construction detail that keeps the upper from separating from the rubber at the welt, the point where most duck boots fail. It's waterproof without a membrane, so there's no liner to delaminate over time, and L.L.Bean will rebuild worn pairs. Around $160, the least expensive boot on this page and one of the most durable.

Important caveat: the Bean Boot, also called the Maine Hunting Shoe, is the only L.L.Bean footwear product made domestically. The rest of L.L.Bean's shoe catalog, hiking boots, sneakers, casual shoes, is manufactured overseas. Look for the "Made in Maine" label.

Caveat: Danner runs four classification tiers on its site, from Berry Compliant (fully domestic) down to boots made entirely overseas. Use the USA-made filter and confirm the specific classification on the product page before buying, since not everything with the Danner name qualifies.

The current Historic Jump Boot keeps the same spec: 10-inch shaft, full-grain spit-shine leather, Goodyear welt, triple-rib steel shank. It's assembled under a union contract in Martinsburg using some internationally sourced components, which Corcoran labels honestly as "Made in USA with global parts," a designation that meets the FTC standard since assembly and primary manufacturing happen domestically. Caveat: Corcoran also sells imported lines, not everything under the name is Pennsylvania-made. USA-made lines carry the "Made in USA with global parts" designation on the boot itself and in the product description.

After a 2008 restructuring and $10 million investment, the company chose to expand domestic production rather than follow competitors offshore, doubling manufacturing jobs there by 2012.

Important caveat: Goodyear-welted styles, the Park Avenue, Fifth Avenue, Strand, and McAllister among them, are completed entirely in Wisconsin. Hand-sewn styles have uppers cut in the Dominican Republic and shipped to Wisconsin for completion, which doesn't meet the FTC's all-or-virtually-all standard. Check for "Made in USA" on the tongue or insole of the specific pair.

Important caveat: the majority of the New Balance catalog is imported.
