Manufactured: Binghamton, New York

McIntosh has designed, built, and tested its amplifiers, tuners, and other audio components at its Binghamton, New York factory since 1956, employing over 150 people. It's one of the few electronics companies of any kind still manufacturing in the United States, in a category almost entirely offshored decades ago. Founded in 1949, McIntosh built the sound system for Woodstock and the Grateful Dead's famous "Wall of Sound" touring rig.

2. 🇺🇸 Schiit Audio

Manufactured: Newhall, California and Corpus Christi, Texas

Schiit Audio designs its headphone amps, DACs, and preamps at its Newhall, California headquarters, with chassis and transformers made in California and circuit boards and final assembly completed at its Corpus Christi, Texas facility. Founded in 2010 by Jason Stoddard and Mike Moffat, the company sells direct to consumers to keep domestically-made gear affordable - the entry-level Magni amp and Modi DAC both start under $150.

Best for: affordable desktop DACs and headphone amps, without the audiophile price tag domestic manufacturing usually implies

3. 🇺🇸 Klipsch (Heritage Series)

Manufactured: Hope, Arkansas (Heritage series only)

Klipsch's Heritage series - the Klipschorn, La Scala, Cornwall, Forte, and Heresy - is still hand-assembled at the Hope, Arkansas factory Paul W. Klipsch founded in 1946, the longest continuous production run in speaker history. The company holds an annual Klipsch Pilgrimage event at the factory each March.

Caveat: this applies to the Heritage line only. Klipsch's Reference, Bookshelf, and all headphone lines are manufactured in China. Even Heritage speakers use some globally sourced components, so treat this as hand-assembled in the USA rather than a strict all-domestic claim.

Joseph Grado started out building phono cartridges by hand before his nephew John took the company in a new direction with headphones in the early 1990s. Three generations of the Grado family have now run the business out of the same building, and the assembly process hasn't been automated - each headphone still moves between individual workbenches on its way from raw parts to a finished pair, checked by hand at each stage rather than on a production line.

Caveat: this applies to Grado's main open-back headphone line. The iGrado product and all of Grado's in-ear models are not made in the United States.

5. 🇺🇸 Audeze

The technology behind Audeze's drivers didn't start in audio at all - the founders adapted ultra-thin film material originally developed for NASA applications, which is how a small Southern California startup working out of a garage in 2008 ended up building headphones with a sound signature closer to studio monitors than typical consumer headphones. Every unit still comes out of the Santa Ana facility today. Sony bought the company in 2023 as part of its push into gaming audio, but the driver manufacturing itself stayed put in California rather than moving anywhere else in Sony's global supply chain.

Campfire Audio has hand-built its in-ear monitors in Portland, Oregon since 2015. Founded by Ken Ball, the audio engineer behind ALO Audio, Campfire develops its own balanced armature, dynamic, hybrid, and planar driver technologies in-house rather than buying off-the-shelf components.

Best for: audiophile in-ear monitors, a category almost entirely made overseas everywhere else

7. 🇺🇸 Dan Clark Audio

Manufactured: San Diego, California

Dan Clark went by MrSpeakers for its first several years in business before the 2020 rebrand. The San Diego workshop hasn't changed - Dan Clark himself started the company modifying other brands' headphones before moving into building his own planar magnetic drivers from scratch. The Acoustic Metamaterial Tuning System, one of six patents the company holds, is a small passive insert between the driver and the ear cup that uses internal waveguides to smooth out a common problem in planar headphones - a harsh peak in the treble - without needing digital correction.

Best for: planar magnetic headphones with proprietary US-engineered tuning technology

8. 🇺🇸 ZMF Headphones

ZMF Headphones has built its wood-cup headphones in Chicago since Zach Mehrbach founded the company in 2011. Each pair is turned from solid wood rather than molded plastic, giving ZMF's headphones a distinct look and weight compared to most of the category.

Best for: wood-cup headphones with heirloom-quality build materials

Manufactured: Carrollton, Georgia and 40+ other US cities

Southwire has manufactured building and electrical wire and cable from its Carrollton, Georgia headquarters since 1950, and remains family-owned. The company operates manufacturing facilities across more than 40 US cities, making it one of North America's largest wire and cable producers. This is mostly industrial and construction-grade wire, but they do offer a line of consumer grade extension cords.

Manufactured: LaGrange, Georgia and Cleveland, Tennessee (AA, AAA, C, and D cells only)

Duracell has assembled its AA and AAA batteries at its LaGrange, Georgia plant for over 40 years, producing more than 2 billion cells a year. C and D batteries are assembled separately at a Cleveland, Tennessee facility, producing over 200 million cells annually. Together the two plants employ about 700 people.

Purism assembles its Liberty Phone at its own facility near San Diego, California, making it one of the only companies, if not the only one, currently assembling smartphones in the United States - a feat major manufacturers have called logistically impossible at scale. Founded in 2014 by CEO Todd Weaver, Purism builds phones and laptops around privacy and security rather than mainstream app-store compatibility, running its own PureOS operating system instead of Android or iOS.

Best for: buyers who specifically want a US-assembled smartphone and are comfortable with a privacy-focused, non-Android operating system
