This is also where there is a good example of the same-parent-company issue. Ames, True Temper, and Razor-Back are all owned by the Griffon Corporation and made mostly at the same Pennsylvania facilities, but their sourcing varies from brand to brand - and one set of well-known products from that group, wheelbarrows, are now manufactured in China since 2023 after 147 years in Harrisburg. That's the kind of change we highlight: when manufacturing moves and the verification becomes out of date. Where a brand's lines are only partly domestic, we name the specific models that qualify rather than saying the whole brand is American made.

Ames traces back to 1774, when blacksmith Captain John Ames began forging metal shovels, making it one of the oldest continuously operating manufacturers in the country; Ames tools reportedly saw use at the Battle of Bunker Hill. The company, now a Griffon Corporation subsidiary, manufactures long-handled tools, striking tools, and hose reels at its Camp Hill and Carlisle facilities, producing a combined 35 million units a year through vertically integrated steel forming, wood turning, and assembly. Worth knowing directly: Ames closed its Harrisburg, Pennsylvania wheelbarrow plant, 85% of US wheelbarrow production, in 2023 and moved that manufacturing to China, so wheelbarrows specifically are no longer part of the domestic story even though shovels, rakes, and hoes still are.

STIHL opened its Virginia Beach facility in 1974 with 50 employees assembling a single chainsaw model. It's grown into the company's largest manufacturing site anywhere in the world - 1.4 million square feet, over 2,300 employees, more than 75 "Made in America" models now, plus the plastic components, pistons, and guide bars used across STIHL's global operations. Homeowner and farm/ranch chainsaws, trimmers, edgers, brush cutters, and blowers all come out of that plant. Not everything does: STIHL's mowers are made in China, so this listing covers the powered hand tools specifically. The larger chainsaws (MS441 and up) and the MS201 are built in Germany instead, and STIHL sources carburetors from Zama, a subsidiary based in China.

Toro acquired Exmark in 1997 but kept the Nebraska plant operating on its own, in the same industrial park it's used since 1983. Current Lazer Z and Radius models run on Kawasaki, Kohler, or Vanguard twin-cylinder engines, all established domestic and Japanese-owned manufacturers with US production - nothing in Exmark's current lineup shows Chinese-sourced engines, whatever older claims about the brand once suggested.

The plastic 400PL version, introduced later as a lighter alternative, is made in the USA too.
